Survivor! Survivor!! Suvivor!!!
This is my story.
In the year 1999, I noticed that my left breast was getting bigger but did not pay attention to it.
I just thought it was my weight gain after my last child. The few months later, I began to feel this unbearable pain. I went to the hospital and had a sonogram. I also had a mammogram and then a biopsy. It was confirmed that I had breast cancer.
In my mind, I didn't want to know what it was because I had seen people who died of breast cancer so in denial, I went to London on vacation - Laugh!
On my return, I saw that the hospital had called my home several times while I was away. I called them back and was told I had a radical type of breast cancer and would need a complete mastecomy of both breasts immediately.
I sort help and thank God, I had another biopsy at Holy Cross Hospital to reconfirm my results before commencing treatment. To the Glory of Almighty God, I had my surgery. I was able to survive the chemotherapy and radiation and I am still standing strong.
This journey was not easy but with the help of God and people, whose love radiated all around me, I don't know what I could have done?????
I have lost some friends to this monster of an illness called breast cancer both here in the United States and abroad. Being a 7 year breast cancer survivor, I count myself lucky.
My gratitude goes to God, my entire family especially my sister Slyvana, who risked her first pregnancy to stand by me all during my chemotherapy not minding the danger, my mother, my friend fati Jobi, the Udujes, Nwilohs, Kwentuas, the Karunwi's, my wonderful children, nieces, nephews and all my well wishers. God bless them all for standing by me and going through this journey with me.
I cannot end this story without thanking the African Women's Cancer Awareness Association (AWCAA) and Mrs. Ify Nwabukwu for their support and contributions in helping me gain back my life since I met them five years ago.
I want to thank them for all their encouragement, medical assistance, social interaction, involvement and concerns they have shown and are still showing towards me and others. May God bless you and empower you more. Amen.
Today, I am not only a survivor but also a trained patient navigator for AWCAA.... Hurray!!!!!
My name is Mrs. Bernadine Oguguo Njoku, i am 54 years. I am a Chief Education Officer with Lagos State Ministry of Education.
The story of my infection and recovery from cancer is a long and tortuous one. It was a long journey riddled with pain and sorrow. It was indeed, a battle of immerse proportion. In fact, it was terrible. But for the invisible hands of the most high God, i am alive today to tell my story. Perhaps, someone else would have told my story.
One would be wondering in his or her mind how did I come in contact with this illness generally referred as a “terminal disease”? I first noticed the lump on my right breast on the 10th of May 2003. In order to confirm its veracity, a right breast lump biopsy was carried out at Jenetta Clinic at 57 Iwaya Road Yaba, Lagos by the medical consultant, Dr. C. M. D. Ozoani on the 17th of May 2003.
Following the test, the biopsy specimen was sent to a pathologist for further tests. The result of the specimen was Invasive Ductile Carcinoma, the outcome of the tests made my doctor to carry out a mastectomy on the 5th of June 2003. He also referred my case to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on the 24th July 2003.
I was scheduled for chemotherapy for six cycles, which was successfully completed and other follow-ups. I have been attending my observation since 2003, while continuing with my drugs Tamoxifen tablets.
I am thanking God almighty who made my healing possible for me to be declared free from further intake of Tamoxifen tablets and any other cancer drugs since December 2010.
When AWCAA came to Lagos State Nigeria i came in contact with them and i narrated my experience, progress and recuperation, they were marvelled and were very happy.
