Dear Friends,

Welcome to the African Women’s Cancer Awareness Association web page.
We are honored to be with the host of other advocates, survivors, supporters, care-givers, health and faith-based organizations to carry out the work of our organization, which is to educate, advocate for and develop self-sufficiency for Africans suffering with cancer.
I in every 2 men and 1 in every 3 women will develop cancer in their lifetime.
More than 1.4 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. The good news is that more Americans are surviving cancer. The bad news however; is that there is a growing number of uninformed Africans diagnosed with cancer who are not surviving. By 2020, there will be more than 16 million new cases globally and 10 million deaths are expected each year. Seventy percent of these deaths will likely occur in developing countries that are unprepared to address their growing cancer burdens writes the CEO of the American Cancer Society, John R. Seffrin, Ph.D. We know that cancer can be controlled, as declining mortality rates for many cancers – especially in developed countries- have proven. The cancer community has made extraordinary progress in many parts of the world, but this is not true in the developing countries, especially most African countries.
For example, cervical cancer is the leading cancer in women in developing countries where organized screening programs do not exist.
AWCAA mission is to develop substantial partnership that eliminate disparities in awareness, prevention and treatment of cancer for Africans especially the medically under served.
We educate through health and wellness seminars and health networking events from a cultural sensitive perspective.
We support group discussions in cultural competency and create a safe space for survivors to come together and share their experiences among each other.
We work for prevention by facilitating access to health screening, diet and nutrition workshops, community leadership and development
We provide patient navigation services to assist patients in the treatment and prevention of a variety of chronic illnesses including all forms of cancer.
We have scholarship programs that provide two scholarships annually to deserving African students.
Our goal is to empower Africans with cancer to be their own best advocate.
The impact of our work will ripple amongst our communities in the years to come as we create larger footsteps in the fight against cancer especially for the underserved and uninsured in the African community.
We thank all our supporters over the years as their generous donations have allowed us to” change lives one woman at a time.”
